Hemorrhoid Treatment-Tips from the Mayo Clinic
The November 2009 Mayo Clinic Health Letter describes the following tips for hemorrhoid treatment:
1. Keep the area clean by taking warm sitz baths several times a day. This can be done in a regular bathtub or using a special sitz bath that fits over your toilet.
2. Use cold compresses to relieve swelling.
3. Use over the counter pain relievers such as Tylenol or Advil to reduce pain.
4. Eat healthy fibrous foods or add a fiber supplement to your diet. Over the counter brands include Metamucil. (There are other supplements you can buy online).
5. Drink lots of water, at least 6-8 glasses per day.
6. Use the toilet when the urge occurs and try to relax during bowel movements.
7. Try over the counter treatments such as creams, ointments, suppositories and witch hazel.
If you don’t find relief from these home treatments it may be time to see a doctor about your problem.
